Koufonisia

No matter how much you've been prepared for -- based on what you've heard about -- the beaches of Koufonisia, what you will actually feel and see when you get there cannot be easily described. Coves with emerald waters that look like natural pools and a background of rocks, uniquely sculpted by the waves, compose a magical picture that fires the senses right away. For many years these two little isles were the refuge of those few who had discovered them. Today, they are a favorite tourist destination, nonetheless keeping their exotic charm. Koufonisia comprise of two isles, Ano (Epano or Apano) and Kato Koufonisi, which are separated by a narrow strait 200m wide and the island of Keros.

Ano Koufonisi

In Ano Koufonisi (or simply Koufonisi), five remarkable beaches stand out, with the most beautiful ones being Pori and Foinikas. Koufonisi’ s Chora, on the southwest coast of the island, is a typical example of Cycladic architecture. The island is experiencing significant development of tourism in the last decade. There is a winter ferry link with Piraeus and Naxos.

Pori is a hamlet on Koufonisi’s northeastern side. It comprises a small number of old and newer holiday homes built in amphitheatric fashion around Pori beach. A couple of café/restaurants operate in the summer. The island’s main road connects Pori with the port.

There is no public transport but rented room owners will provide transportation. In the summer months a privately-operated bus does excursions from the port to the various beaches. Pori is also accessed by small boats from the port.

Kato Koufonisi

Kato Koufonisi is virtually deserted, but has a small port and numerous small and isolated beaches.

Keros

Keros is located between the two Koufonisia islands and Schinousa. Keros was as prominent during the period of the early Cycladic civilization, as Delos was during Classical antiquity. Nowadays, you can reach it by boat, from Ano Koufonisi
